There is a point every Christian reach when they want to know how to release the power of God in their life. This is a common question because every Christian desires to do more in the service of their Lord, Jesus Christ.

How do you release the power of God? You release the power of God by speaking faith-filled words in Jesus’ name, knowing it is the Father who does the works. Therefore, the power of God is released by faith, using the name of Jesus, and done in humility to the Father.

Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:12-14 CSB)

In this passage, Jesus is teaching His eleven disciples how they will do greater works than He. He tells them the three-step process to releasing the power of God.

  • Believe what you say – this is the faith part
  • Ask in His name
  • Be humble, knowing it is the Father that does the works

God never makes things complicated. He keeps it simple. Just three steps to releasing the power of God.

What Is the Power of God?

The Holy Spirit is the power of God. We see this from the very beginning. The Holy Spirit was moving upon the face of the earth. God spoke and the Holy Spirit went into action, performing the words God spoke. (see: Genesis 1:1-2 and Job 26:13)

Jesus was filled and anointed by the Holy Spirit, empowering Him to do miracles and wonders while living as a man on earth. (see: Luke 4:1; 14; 18-19; Matthew 12:28)

In the same way, the early church was empowered by the Holy Spirit. We see this by the signs and wonders done throughout the book of Acts. The Holy Spirit also empowers us.

I pray that he may grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with power in your inner being through his Spirit. Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us. (Ephesians 16; 20 CSB)

Paul’s prayer for the church at Ephesus leaves no doubt that we have the power of God dwelling in us through the Holy Spirit.

How Do We Receive the Power of God?

We receive the power of God at the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is how it happened to Jesus.

When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As he was praying, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.” Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit… (Luke 3:21; 4:1 CSB)

When Jesus came up out of the water when He was baptized, the Holy Spirit came down like a dove and filled Jesus. From that moment on Jesus was empowered to miracles, signs, and wonders.

The same thing happened to the 120 disciples of Jesus in the upper room, except the Holy Spirit came in the form of fire.

When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:1-4 CSB)

This same experience is available to every believer today.

Why Do We Have the Power of God?

What is its purpose? The purpose of the power of God in our life is to empower us to live a holy life and to reveal the Kingdom of God to the world through signs and wonders.

This is what Jesus told His disciples before He ascended into heaven.

Then he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes; if they should drink anything deadly, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.” (Mark 16:15-18 CSB)
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8 CSB)

Our purpose on earth is to be a witness to the world of the excellence of the Kingdom of God. We are living proof that God’s righteousness, His way of doing and being right, is best.

We reveal the Kingdom of God through a holy life, sharing the Gospel, and with the Lord going with us, confirming His Word with signs and wonders.

This is the purpose for us to be filled with the Holy Spirit and power.

How to Increase the Power of God in Your Life

When it comes to the things of God, I am never satisfied with what I have. I want more of His love, more of His grace, more anointing, more mercy.

This goes double for His power. I want more of His power so I can be more of a witness. This desire is driven by compassion for the lost in the world.

Are you like me? Are you seeking how to increase the power of God in your life? If you are, let me share the five steps to increasing the power of God in your life.

  1. Extravagant worship
  2. Extreme humility
  3. Excellent obedience
  4. Expanding love
  5. Exposure to the power

Increasing in the five steps will increase the power of God in your life. Just keep doing each one over and over. Each time you increase in one of the five steps, you also increase the power of God in your life.

Extravagant Worship

To understand extravagant worship, we need to understand the meaning of extravagant. Webster’s says extravagant is: Exceeding due bounds; wild; excessive; unrestrained; profuse in expenditure.

Therefore, extravagant worship is beyond the boundaries of normally restrained worship. It is excessive, unrestrained, wild, and profuse. Extravagant worship is focused solely on God.

Some words in the definition of extravagant worship sound almost out of control. God is orderly. There is a due time for everything. There is a time for wild and reckless worship, yet extravagant worship can be quietly intense.

The idea of extravagant worship is to focus solely on God. Forget about those around you. You are worshiping the Father and it doesn’t matter what other people think. Freely express your love and adoration for your Lord.

Extreme humility

This step can be difficult. It is not in our nature to be humble, and when we are, it can often be  false humility.

Peter said, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 CSB)

Peter tells us what genuine humility is. It is casting all your cares upon the Lord. This means in every area of our life. Though I want to focus solely on the area of being a witness.

We are not to worry or concern ourselves with the results. God will handle the results. We are simply to be obedient, which is the ultimate humility.

If God says to say something, we say it. If He tells us to do something, we do it. We leave the results up to God.

When we pray for the sick, we cast the care of them being healed onto the Lord. Our responsibility is to pray only.

When we share the Gospel, we cast the care of their salvation onto the Lord. We just share the Gospel. Salvation is God’s responsibility.

This is genuine humility: casting all our cares upon the Lord because He cares for us.

Excellent obedience

Here is another difficult one. The difficulty arises in knowing if it is God telling you to do something. What if it isn’t? How do you know the difference?

If it is obedience to what God says in His Word, then there is no doubt. God said it, we do it. Simple, isn’t it?

Our difficulty is knowing when God speaks in our spirit to do something. Is it really God speaking or not?

Here is a two-step test:

  • Is it in line with what God says in His Word?
  • Does it bring peace in your spirit?

Just ask yourself those two questions each time. If you make a mistake, then repent and go on. You will quickly learn to distinguish the voice of God from all the other voices around you.

Expanding love

Expand your love to include everyone. Love your brother and sister in Christ first. Then move on to loving your neighbor.

Now the more difficult areas. Love your enemy, those who persecute you, ones that use you, and the haters. Love the unlovely. The hurting and the homeless.

Love is important because faith works by love. “… what matters is faith working through love.” (Galatians 5:6b CSB)

Exposure to the power of God

This last step is important. To learn about the power of God and to increase it, we need to be exposed to the power of God. We need to be where the power of God is working.

But there is another aspect of being exposed to the power of God. Impartation. The power of God can be imparted to you when you are where it is working.

Exposure is important just starting out and is necessary when you want to increase the power of God in your life.

Hang out with those who operate in the power of God. Partner with a ministry which operates in the power of God the way you desire. Partnership allows you to share in the anointing of that ministry.

Get around the power. Go to conferences and meetings where the power of God is flowing. Get into revivals. Be there when the Holy Spirit moves in signs and wonders.

Exposure is an important step toward increasing the power of God in your life.

Desire is the Prime Motivator

Your desire is the motivator for pursuing the power of God in your life. To go through the effort of attaining the power of God in your life requires the desire to do so.

Therefore, you need to examine the source of your desire. If it is for personal gain or pride, forget it.

But, if it originates from your compassion towards others, then you have a compelling motivator. This matches God’s desire towards the world and allows Him the freedom to release more of His power in your life.

Examine your desire and evaluate your purpose in wanting more of God’s power.

The Power of God from Your Life to the World

We need to release more of the power of God in our life, so we can release more power to the world. God’s power is the greatest when it flows through weakness.

Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us. (2 Corinthians 4:7 CSB)

Christians are the clay jars. God has chosen to work through us because it makes His power even greater in the world.

When He does miracles, signs, and wonders through us, the world praises God because they know we personally don’t have the power to do it.

Light shines brightest in the dark. Power shows itself strongest in human weakness.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9 CSB)

The world needs to experience the power of God flowing abundantly through Christians. That is why He gave us the power. To change the world.

The Challenge

I challenge you to seek more of God’s power in your life. Dare to step out into the arena of miracle working power. Do the five steps to increase the power of God in your life. Then, go use that power to help a hopeless, lost world.
