The Bible says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6) It also says four different times, “The just shall live by faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38)

This makes knowing how to grow your faith God’s way important. We want to please our Heavenly Father in continuous greater measure. Growing our faith does this.

How to Grow Your Faith God’s Way

How do we grow our faith God’s way? I am not interested in what others say about this. I am only interested in what God says about this.

I want to specify the faith I am speaking of is not faith in a denomination or doctrine. I am speaking of faith in God’s Word. Faith that He will bring His Word to come to pass in your life.

There are three actions that grow your faith God’s way:

  1. Hearing and reading the Word of God.
  2. Praying in the Spirit.
  3. Exercising your faith.

Again, this is what I have found in God’s Word about how to grow your faith. There are other essential actions that aid in growing our faith. I will cover those at the end of the article.

Grow Your Faith By Hearing and Reading the Word of God

The primary way to grow your faith God’s way is through His Word.

Romans 10:17 tells us, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (NKJV)

Faith comes through the hearing and reading of His Word. This is the only process through which faith comes. I have found no other way in the pages of my Bible. Therefore, it is also one way we can increase our faith.

If we originally get our faith from reading and hearing God’s Word, then it makes sense our faith will grow this way too.

You and I either heard or read about salvation. Faith grew in our heart to be saved and we were born again by grace through faith. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

This is the exact process of receiving anything from God. First, you hear or read the Word on that topic. Next, your faith grows for it. And finally, you receive it.

For example, let’s say we are looking for peace in our life. We begin to study peace in the Bible. We read of people in the Bible that have peace and of others that didn’t have peace. We also read scriptures where God promises peace.

Then, we also start listening to sermons and teaching about peace. We learn of God’s promises for peace. We also learn why some have peace and others do not have peace.

As we do these things, our faith in peace grows until it happens in our life. Every promise of God works this way. Salvation, peace, joy, faith, healing, etc.

Emphasis On Daily Reading and Studying God’s Word

This places a special emphasis on reading and studying God’s Word. Yet it makes sense. God’s Word is the food for our spirit. If it feeds our spirit, then it must grow our faith.

Remember, faith pleases God. Therefore, it is necessary for us to hear and read God’s Word daily. That isn’t hard to do. Reading a chapter a day doesn’t take long. Do it first thing in the morning and you will find your day improved.

But before you read or listen to the Word, invite the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you need to know. This will allow for greater and more personal revelation.

Hearing the Word of God is easy in this day of technology. You can immerse yourself in the teaching of the Word. Especially driving in the car. If you commute alone, this is a perfect time to listen to God’s Word and the teaching of God’s Word.

Make growing your faith a priority, and you will find the time to feed your spirit.

Grow Your Faith Through Praying In the Spirit

Another way to build your faith is through praying in the Spirit. I am not trying to create controversy over speaking in tongues. I am only quoting what the Word of God says.

But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. (Jude 20 CSB)

Jude, the brother of Jesus, tells us praying in the Spirit will build our faith. Why is this?

Praying in the Spirit is our spirit praying directly to the Spirit of God. It takes faith to pray in a language your intellect can’t understand. Using our faith will build our faith.

Yet, it is more than this. Talking to God’s Spirit through our spirit causes spiritual growth. As our spirit grows, so does our faith grow.

Praying in the Spirit gives us deeper revelation. As we pray in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit is talking to our spirit. Soon, we start to get a sense of what we are praying about.

Grow Your Faith Through Exercising Your Faith

I touched on this in the above section. Using our faith will exercise our faith. As we exercise our faith, it will grow. It acts like a spiritual muscle.

After calming the storm, Jesus asked his disciples, “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25 CSB)

Jesus was asking them, “Why didn’t you use your faith to stop the storm?” The disciples could have used their faith to stop the storm. They didn’t do it because, up to this point, they haven’t really used or exercised their faith.

Look at what James wrote, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?” (James 2:14 CSB)

I particularly like how the Weymouth Translation renders this verse: “What good is it, my brethren, if a man professes to have faith, and yet his actions do not correspond? Can such faith save him?

Our faith must have corresponding action. We must exercise our faith. We must put our faith into action. Using our faith exercises our faith.

Therefore, our faith responds like a spiritual muscle and grows when we use it. As our faith grows, so does our capacity to believe for more and bigger things.

You can exercise your faith in peace so that you have no problem with peace. No matter what happens around you, you are always established in peace.
But you may not have any joy in your life. Why? Because you haven’t exercised your faith for joy. This is like a bodybuilder. They can do all these exercises for their arms and chest, but none for their legs. They will have a huge upper body and a spindly lower body.

The body parts which are exercised are the body parts that will grow. It works the same way in the spiritual realm.

Other Essential Actions to Grow Your Faith

There are some other Christian disciplines that will aid you in growing your faith. They are really the basics every Christian should do each day. Here are four disciplines that will help you grow in your faith:

  1. Prayer
  2. Bible Study
  3. Attend church
  4. Fellowship

We find these in Acts 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

Let’s look a little deeper into why these four disciplines are essential actions to growing your faith.

Prayer

Prayer is essential because it is our intimate time spent with our Heavenly Father. The prayer I am talking about here is a time set aside just for you and God.

Therefore, it is a time when you are doing nothing else but talking to God and listening to what He says. Sure, we can pray while doing other things. And we should pray always.

But there must be a time each day that is set aside for spending time one-on-one with God. This is how intimacy with our Father develops.

Bible Study

Bible study is important to our spiritual growth. God’s Word is the food for our spirit. Neglecting daily feeding will weaken our spirit. A weak spirit is not effective in the spiritual battle we must fight.

That is why we need to daily study the Bible. It feeds our spirit and grows our faith. We need a powerful spirit and strong faith to battle the enemy.

Attend Church

Attending church is an essential discipline we need. Not only is it needed, God commands the gathering of ourselves through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration when Hebrews is written.

Hebrews 10:25 “Not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.

This doesn’t include church online. We can’t gather together and fellowship online. Now, if you are in a position where there is no church nearby, then an online church is necessary.

That isn’t the position most of us are in. If God commands it, we must do it. If not, it is sin.

Fellowship

While church services often include fellowship, this is different. We need to spend time with other Christians. Iron sharpens iron. (See: Proverbs 27:17)

Spending time fellowshiping allows us to learn from each other. This way, we are teaching each other how to overcome different obstacles.

This is an important aspect of our spiritual development and the growth of our faith.

You Can Grow Your Faith

Let me close with this. You can grow your faith! Follow the steps outlined in this article and your faith will grow. Not overnight, but steadily.

The effort you make to grow your faith is effort well spent. With your growing faith, you will please God. Even more important, you will overcome the world and the god of this world with your faith. (God of this world: 2 Corinthians 4:4)

You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4 CSB)
