God’s Word Is Final Authority: You Can Be An Overcomer By Faith

To be an overcomer we must make the choice God's Word is final authority in our life. This decision propels us into greater faith and deeper intimacy with God.

The Apostle John says that we are overcomers by our faith. (1 John 5:4) For us to be an overcomer, we must decide God’s Word is final authority in our life.

After over fifty years of following Jesus and forty years of ministry, I have chosen both ways to live my life. I found that making God’s Word final authority always works best. I have observed this same thing thousands of times in other people’s lives.

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17 CSB)

The only way to be an overcomer is by making the choice that God’s Word is final authority in your life.

What do I mean by this?

God’s Word is final authority when we choose it over what anyone says, what we feel, or what we see. We choose to do what God says in His Word over everything else that conflicts with what the Word says.

We Are an Overcomer When God’s Word is Final Authority

There is a god of this world named satan that hates every believer. (see: 2 Corinthians 4:4) He is the thief that steals, kills, and destroys. (see John 10:10) The devil’s primary goal is to steal the Word sown into our lives. (We are told this in the parable of the Sower Sows the Word in Mark chapter four.)

It is because of satan that we experience trials, tribulations, and persecution. He is trying to steal, kill, or destroy the Word of God that is in us. If he can steal the Word, then he has stolen our faith.

Why do I say this? Because of what the Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul to write to the Christians in Rome.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17 CSB)

Faith only comes by the Word of God. If satan is able to steal, kill, or destroy the Word in our life, then he has also stolen, killed, or destroyed our faith. Without faith, we are helpless against his attacks. (see: Ephesians 6:16)

If we don’t have faith, then we don’t overcome the world. The world then overcomes us. This is not a situation we want to find ourselves in.

When we live a life where God’s Word is final authority, we also live a life as an overcomer.

How to Make God’s Word Final Authority in Your Life

To make God’s Word final authority in your life takes a quality decision. So, what is a quality decision?

A quality decision is one you make and you never back down from it. It is a decision that is permanent in your life from that point forward. This is the decision you need to make concerning the Word of God.

Here is the best illustration I can make of this. Pretend to draw a line on the ground in front of you. Say aloud, “Everyone that wants to make the Word final authority in your life, step over the line.” Then step over the line.

From this point forever, act on the fact the Word is final authority in your life. You will do what the Word of God says regardless of what it looks like in the natural. Even when your mind or flesh is screaming out, “That isn’t right.”

When someone acts ugly and hateful to you, you will love them just as God says you are to love them. Even though your mind says this is wrong and your flesh is crying out to get even by being hateful back.

No matter what the decision is or how the future result may appear to you, you always choose the Word.

We Were Never Promised It Would Be Easy

There are times when God’s Word is final authority in your life makes for the hardest choice you ever make. Such as when your peers make fun of you for choosing to remain a virgin instead of following the world’s loose morals.

It may be when you are working for an unreasonable tyrant and continue to do your work as unto the Lord when everyone else barely does the minimum requirement. Now your coworkers are mad at you because you are making them look bad.

It could be when you told the truth, knowing the outcome will be detrimental to you. Or you continue to tithe even though you are struggling to pay your bills. It could be turning down a big promotion at work because it requires you to work Sundays, and that is the day you honor God.

God never promised us an easy path in life, but when God’s Word is final authority in your life, you will always be an overcomer.

The Results When God’s Word is Final Authority

What are the results of making God’s Word the final authority in your life? How does it benefit us?

  1. It makes your faith grow and become stronger. When you make every choice in life based upon the Word of God, you are daily seeking God’s will in His Word. Your faith increases because faith comes by hearing the Word of God. (Romans 10:17)
  2. You become more skillful in your use of the Word just like we are told in Hebrews 5:11-14. The choice to make God’s Word final authority in our life causes us to quickly move from the milk of the Word to the meat of the Word. Your senses even become trained to know the difference between good and evil.
  3. You are equipped for every good work God created for us. (see: Ephesians 2:10 and 2 Timothy 3:16) Knowing the Word of God is profitable will keep you on the right path.
  4. Grace and peace will be multiplied in your life according to 2 Peter 1:2. Grace and peace is multiplied in our life through our increasing knowledge of God. The more we know of God’s character and attributes, the more peace and grace we have in our life. Making God’s Word the final authority in your life keeps you daily in the Word, and therefore, increases your knowledge of Him.

You will have everything you need to live for your physical and spiritual life on earth. God’s divine power, the Holy Spirit, has already given us everything we need for life and godliness. We appropriate it through our knowledge of God. (see: 2 Peter 1:3)
