Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey—either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? (Romans 6:16 CSB)
Americans appear to be a very independent breed of people. We rebel against the idea of being slaves to anyone. Didn’t our ancestors travel to America to escape tyranny? It seems their choices bred independence into our DNA.
Yet, the truth of Scripture is that mankind was created to have a Lord rule over them. The original intention was to have God as Lord over all mankind. When Adam sinned, he bowed his knee to that evil angel, satan.
Therefore, due to Adam’s original sin, all of mankind is born as slaves to satan and sin. But we do have a choice. Due to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross as the Lamb of God, mankind has a choice of who will be their Lord.
While living on earth, each of us chooses who our lord will be for eternity. Either Jesus or satan. But it doesn’t end there. The actions we take are of sin, leading to death, or righteousness, leading to eternal life.
Of course, all of us make mistakes. When we sin, it should be by accident, misunderstanding, or lack of knowledge. It should never be a conscious decision to sin because we live by grace, and therefore we know God will forgive us.
To make a conscious decision to sin is called rebellion. Pride causes rebellion, and pride is the source of Lucifer’s rebellion against God.
So, I ask you, “Whose slave are you? Who is your lord?” Do your conscious actions match your decision of who your Lord is?
You are a slave to a lord. Make sure you are a slave to God and righteousness. Let the world see Jesus is your Lord by your daily actions and words.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for being the Lord of my life. I desire to be a slave to righteousness daily. Holy Spirit, I give you consent to arrest me the moment I do anything that is a sin or even appears to be a sin. I commit myself to your ways and to live by your truth. Thank you for empowering me to be the believer you desire me to be. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
