The Result of Tribulation

Jesus told us there would be tribulation in this world. Since we know we will suffer tribulation, we need to learn how God wants us to handle tribulation.

And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. (Romans 5:3-4 CSB)

With this week’s devotion, we will continue talking about tribulation. Jesus told us there will be tribulation in this world. (see John 16:33) It isn’t a matter of what we do IF tribulation comes, but WHEN tribulation comes.

Since Jesus assures us of tribulation happening, the difference is in what we do when experiencing tribulation. We know God isn’t the cause of tribulations, tests, or trials. (see James 1:13) This doesn’t mean that tribulation can’t become beneficial for us.

If tribulation is going to happen in our lives, what is the result of tribulation? If we are to have tribulations during our lifetime on earth, doesn’t it make sense that God would train us on how to deal with tribulation?

The result of tribulation is that it produces endurance or patience. This is an important quality for Christians to develop. The Greek word used for endurance differs from the one used in Galatians 5:22 for patience when Paul lists the fruit of the spirit.

The Greek word used here is “
hupomonee” which means:

        1. steadfastness, constancy, endurance
        2. a patient, steadfast waiting for
        3. a patient enduring, sustaining

So, what does this endurance mean for us as Christians? We find the answer to this question in
Why we have tribulation, tests, and trials. James 1:3 tells us we have tribulations because our faith is being tested. “Because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” (CSB)

Tribulations come because satan is testing our faith. We must patiently endure tribulation to get the promises of God. How do we patiently endure while going through tribulation?

Let’s say the tribulation is a negative doctor’s report. The doctor has just diagnosed you with stage four cancer. Your first choice is to either accept the doctor’s report and not stand in faith, or to stand in faith and accept God’s promise of healing as superior to the doctor’s report.

You choose to stand in faith on God’s Promises:
Exodus 15:26b “For I am the Lord who heals you.” (CSB)
Psalm 103:3b “He heals all your diseases.” (CSB)
Matthew 12:15 “Large crowds followed him, and he (Jesus) healed them all.” (CSB)

You hold on to these promises when it looks as if the cancer is going to get worse; standing firm on them through the pain and suffering the disease is causing your body to feel. You steadfastly hold on to your faith, patiently enduring because you know God’s promises are yes and amen.

Finally, after months or even years, you come out of the tribulation completely healed. This is the result of tribulation:
Great endurance produces great faith.

Don’t cower in fear and uncertainty when tribulation comes. Stand strong in your faith, turning to God’s Word and His promises for your situation. Run the race of faith with endurance and you will win the prize of hearing: “Well done, my good and faithful servant!”

Prayer

Father, I come to you in faith. I am facing tribulation in my life and am seeking Your wisdom on how to stand in faith during this time of tribulation. I know You are not a man that You should lie. I know that all your promises are sure. Just as You brought the Israelites out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land, I know You will bring me through this tribulation to the greater glory on the other side. I thank You and praise You now for bringing me through this time of testing. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

I do not capitalize the name “satan” in my writing. He neither deserves the honor or respect that entails.
