When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. (John 16:13 CSB)
With the coming of another new year, the question on everyone’s lips is, “What will the coming year bring for us?”
Each of us would like to know what will happen this coming year. As a believer, there is no reason for us to guess. The job of the Holy Spirit is to show us things to come.
Yet, most believers do not ask. Why? Because they don’t know to ask. This lack of teaching cripples Christians in their effectiveness in the spiritual battle.
Look at how this operated for Elisha in the Old Testament.
One of his servants said, “No one, my lord the king. Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in your bedroom.” (2 Kings 6:12 CSB)
“Yes,” you say. “But that was Elisha, and he is a prophet of God.” You are correct when you say that. But remember, the only ones that had the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament were the kings, prophets, and priests.
In the New Testament, all believers have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. All Christians have the ability for the Holy Spirit to tell them of things to come.
Now, all believers are not prophets. God will tell prophets more about future events. Events that will affect the Church. Yet, all believers can know what is to come that will affect them and their families.
Once you understand this, you will spend time in your prayer closet asking God to reveal through the Holy Spirit those things you need to know about the coming year.
Don’t be caught unawares. Seek what the new year holds for you. The Holy Spirit is our spy in the enemy’s camp. He is fully able to show us beforehand the traps satan has laid for us.
Therefore, go into your prayer closet with your Bible and a notebook. Find out what the new year will bring. The Holy Spirit will reveal to you things to come and then give you the plan to make the most of the coming year.
Prayer
Father, I thank you for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. I now ask the Holy Spirit to show me what is to come in this new year. You promised He would, therefore I expect it to happen. After showing me what is to come, please give me the plan I need for the coming year. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
