Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2 CSB)
The transforming power of the Gospel still amazes me, even after all these years of observing it. Repeatedly, I have seen it take wrecked and broken people transforming them into loving servants of the Living God.
One of those people was my father. The man I call “Father,” is my stepfather. He married my Mom and three kids when I was five years old. I have only known him as a Christian, but that wasn’t so about six months before Mom met him.
Before his conversion, my father was an alcoholic. According to him, it was so bad the last thing he did at night was pop a beer, and the first thing he did in the morning was to drink that beer.
After my parents married, I observed the continuing transformation of my Dad. Over the years, the change was dramatic. It was the Gospel that transformed him.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes… (Romans 1:16 CSB)
Yet, I know many people who are born again where you don’t see that transformation. Their life goes on just about like it did before the new birth, with little to no change.
What makes the difference? We find the answer in Romans 12:2 – renewing your mind with the Word of God. The Gospel must be applied to our minds for our thinking and actions to be transformed.
The Gospel, the Good News, is the Word of God. We must get the Word into us so it will renew our minds to God’s way of doing and being right. This is the key to the Gospel transforming us.
It is our daily time spent in the Word that makes the difference. Without the Word, there is no or little transformation. God’s Word is food for our spirit and the renewer of our mind.
This transformation continues throughout our life on earth as long as we are daily reading the scriptures. If you haven’t been reading your Bible daily, there is no better time than today to start. If you are reading your Bible daily, continue the good job.
Prayer
Father, I thank you for the new birth that has made me a new creation. I am committed to daily reading your Word. As I read your Word, I will change what needs to be changed and I will be what you say I am. I thank you for leading and guiding me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
