Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him! (Psalm 34:8 CSB)
One of my fondest memories from childhood is coming home from school and smelling homemade bread before I even opened the door. As we came into the house, my brother and two sisters would tell Mom the bread looked and smelled wonderful, then go off to do whatever they were going to do.
Not me. I would walk over to the kitchen table and smell deeply of those wheat loaves. Mom would then ask me if I wanted a slice and I would always say, “Yes.”
She would take the serrated bread knife and cut a thick slice of wheat bread, never the heel, but an inner piece. I would get homemade butter out of the fridge and slather the bread with it, enjoying the sight of the butter melting into all the crevices of the still-warm bread.
Then, I would sit at the table eating my warm slice of bread and talk to Mom about my day. This became a ritual for Mom and me whenever she baked bread.
Notice the difference between my siblings and me. They enjoyed the sight and smell of the bread, but that was as far as they went. I had to get close and literally taste the bread. I became personally involved with the bread.
Taste of the Lord
It is the same way with the Lord. There are many Christians that talk about Him and His goodness. They know a lot about Him but have never tasted of Him.
Then, there are the few that truly taste of the Lord. They are the ones that get totally involved in Him with all their senses, just as I did with the homemade bread. I not only saw and smelled the bread, but I also touched it, inspected it, and tasted it.
We need to do this with our Heavenly Father. We need to get totally involved with Him. All our senses need to participate in this. This is why the scripture says to “taste of the Lord.”
We are to get deeply involved with God. Once we do, we find out from personal experience just how good He truly is. Once we taste of the Lord, it is only natural that we go all in and take refuge in Him.
It is when we make God our refuge that we are completely happy. This is because our complete trust, confidence, and even our very life is placed in Him.
How to Taste of the Lord
Tasting of the Lord begins with daily Bible study. We first get personally involved with God through His Word. In God’s Word, we learn about God’s character, attributes, and way of doing things.
Without daily involvement in the Word, tasting of the Lord. Nothing else happens. Daily Bible study is the first step and then intimacy will happen. It all begins with tasting of the Lord in His Word.
I challenge you if you have not already done so, to make a quality decision to taste of the Lord daily from His Word. Taste of Him first and then you can make the Lord your refuge.
Prayer
Father, I commit myself to daily tasting of you in your Word. I will be committed and completely involved with you. Whatever I read in your Word, I will take personally. I will be what you say I am, and I will do what you say I can do. I am making the quality decision to make you my only refuge. I thank you for your goodness and your deep love for me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
