Last Sunday, our worship leader, Tammy, told a story about buying a lemon tree for her mother-in-law. She went to a nursery and picked out a lemon tree. The worker helped her load it into a cart and take it into the main building to pay for it.
When they entered the building, she spotted in the middle of the store a massive tree in a large pot. She asked the nursery worker, “Is that a lemon tree?”, to which he replied, “Yes.”
Tammy said, “I am buying this for my mother-in-law, and she wants to bring it into the house during the cold months. If it is going to grow that big, I better not buy it.”
The nursery worker explained that the lemon tree she is buying doesn’t have to grow that big. He explained a lemon tree will only get as big as the pot it is planted in. Once it is as large as the pot, its roots become constricted, and it won’t grow any larger.
As I sat in church hearing this story, I turned to my wife, Cindy, and told her, “I need a bigger pot.” Why did I say that? Because I want my roots to grow even stronger in the truth and to overflow with greater thankfulness.
Today I ask you, “How big is your pot?” Colossians 2:7 says, “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him.”
In the current times we live in, we need a larger root system. We must expand our life that is built on Him, the Lord Jesus Christ. What do I mean by the times we live in?
Last night, I filled my tank at $4.49 a gallon. To date, America has had over 273 mass shootings, and it is only early June. Prime interest is at 4% and only shows signs of increasing with inflation on the rise. The number one cause of death among teenagers now is suicide.
Need I say more? Because I can. A lot more.
We need our roots to grow big and strong, because they are what supports the tree of spiritual life we need to survive. Get a massive pot and grow a massive spiritual tree.
How do you create a larger spiritual pot? By prayer and Bible study. That is what it takes, along with doing what the Word says.
Then your faith will grow strong in the truth, and you will overflow with thankfulness amid a world filled with turmoil. Build your life on Jesus.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father. I thank you for the spiritual growth I have experienced up to this point. Now I declare I am increasing my pot and want to grow my roots deeper in Jesus. I commit myself to daily prayer and Bible study to do so. Doing this will cause my faith to grow in the truth and I will overflow with more thankfulness than I have today. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
