Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16 CSB)
One of my greatest lessons of grace came from my grandmother. My grandmother on my mother’s side was very much self-centered. Not my father’s mother. She acted as if her grandchildren could do no wrong. Her grandchildren were her world. When we were in the room, everyone else faded away and lessened in importance.
Just before Thanksgiving, the year I turned sixteen, I got two speeding tickets only two weeks apart. That year at thanksgiving, the older men (my father, my uncles, and even great-uncles) teased me mercilessly about those tickets.
Then my grandmother entered the room. “Don’t let them tease you about speeding,” my grandmother said to me. “I could tell you some stories about each of them.”
Suddenly, all the men grew quiet. “In fact,” she said, “Let me tell you about your grandpa and (great) Uncle Russ. When we were dating, your grandpa and Uncle Russ raced each other and other boys in their buggies (horse-drawn). Once during a race, while turning a corner, your Uncle Russ wrecked his father’s prize buggy.’
“So,” she said. “Boys don’t need cars to go fast. They have been going fast as long as there have been boys.” Then she left the room and the men quickly started talking about Steeler football.
I have always been forever grateful for my grandmother extending that grace to me. The older I get, the more I can relate my spiritual life to her intervention. My grandmother extended grace to me and effectively quieted my accusers.
The Throne of Grace
God does the same for us spiritually that my grandmother had done for me in the natural. See, we are God’s whole world. He made this world specifically for us to live in.
When the accuser, satan, comes at us and mercilessly attacks us with our past, God invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace and obtain the grace and mercy we need at that moment.
Through Jesus’ work on the cross, and his formula for forgiveness in 1 John 1:9, God empowers us to stand up to the devil, silencing him with our God-given righteousness.
Don’t allow the devil to accuse you mercilessly of your past. Open your Bible to 1 John 1:9 and read aloud to your accuser that you are forgiven because you have confessed your sin. Furthermore, show that vile accuser where it says God has cleansed you of all your unrighteousness.
This is what grace is all about. God forgets your past confessed sin. Therefore, you have every right to silence the accuser of the brethren and not put up with his merciless accusations.
Prayer
Father, I thank you for allowing me to boldly approach your throne of grace. I receive your mercy and grace in my time of need. When I sin, I am quick to confess that sin so that you may cleanse me of all unrighteousness, just as you promise. I will put satan under my feet with your Word every time he raises his ugly head in accusation. Thank you for your vast grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
