And your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. (Ephesians 6:15 CSB)
Do you remember the first time you got a special pair of shoes? Ones that you wanted for a long time? Can you remember the feeling you had the first time you wore them?
Shoes can be special. For women, shoes can make or break an outfit. With men, often the right shoes give confidence. Most of us care about the shoes we wear.
But what about as a Christian? Do you care about the shoes you wear as a Christian? The spiritual shoes you wear can make or break your Christian life.
All of us are called to wear the shoes of the readiness for the Gospel of peace. These are not walking shoes. They are not shoes intended for the spreading of the Gospel.
The context here is of the Christian standing in the battle. These are shoes designed for the soldier to be sure-footed in the midst of battle.
The sandals a Roman soldier wore had 1-3 inch spikes attached to the sole. The spikes are designed so they would pierce the ground and allow the soldier to stand firm when the enemy attacked. This way, the Roman soldiers couldn’t be pushed back.
This is what the Gospel of peace does for us. Amid the fiercest enemy attack, we can stand firm with our hearts at peace. We know that Jesus has already conquered the enemy and God is always with us.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10 CSB)
If you have your Gospel shoes on, you can withstand any enemy attack, for you are not alone. God is with you. He will strengthen and hold you firm with His right hand.
Then you have your brother and sisters in Christ at your local body – the Church. They will lock arms with you and help you to stand.
So, again I ask, “Do you have your Gospel shoes on?”
Prayer
Father. I thank you for providing me with shoes shod with the readiness of the Gospel of Peace. Wearing these shoes, I will stand firm against every attack of the enemy. You are always with me and strengthen me. I will not be afraid of my enemy. I will stand firm because you are helping me and upholding me with your righteous right hand. Thank you, Lord, for these shoes. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
